Turmeric Milk
With winter on our door step, here is a wonderful drink that can assist in warding of the signs and symtons of colds and flus. The drink has turmeric which is a natural antibiotic and ginger the everfaithful cold fighter. As kids my grandmother always made this for us during the winter months, even though we never experienced real winter in Kwazulu Natal. I have still carried on this tradition with my sons. For those that are lactose intolerent, you can take all the spices and boil them with some water or even soya milk. You can also sweeten to taste with a sugar substitute.
Turmeric Milk (Serves 4)
1l fat free milk
4-5 slices of fresh ginger
4-5 cloves
4-5 pieces cinnamon sticks
2.5ml turmeric powder
2ml cinnamon powder
2ml nutmeg powder
5ml ginger powder (for extra strength)
Honey (to taste)
Method
- Add all of the above to a medium size pot and bring to a boil
- Once the milk starts to boil, lower heat and simmer for 10minutes, stirring all the time
- Strain and pour into mugs and add honey to taste and drink as hot as possible

I do this in hot water – but not with the nutmeg. I add some lemon – which would be gross in the milk I am sure. Hope the flu does not find you this winter 🙂
