Rice Dumplings

We always have left over rice and never know what to do with, and with this recipe you can use up the left over rice and create a healthy snack. It is a very common snack amongst the vegetarian Gujerathi community. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

Rice Dumplings in Gravy

Dumplings

250ml cooked basmati rice

75ml soya flour

75ml chick pea flour

2ml turmeric powder

5ml crushed cumin

7ml salt

5ml ginger & garlic paste

1 green chilli (finely chopped)

40ml finely chopped coriander

15ml sunflower oil

10ml lemon juice

35ml water (more if necessary)

Tempering Spices

10ml sunflower oil

5ml mustard seeds

3-4 curry leaves

1 green chilli

200ml water

10ml lemon juice

3ml sugar

3ml salt

25ml finely chopped coriander

Method-Dumplings

  •  Mix all of the ingredients for the dumplings together
  •  Use enough water to make a soft dough like mixture
  •  In a heavy based pot heat the oil for the tempering spices
  •  Add the mustard seeds, curry leaves and chilli and allow the aroma to arise and lower the heat
  •  Now add the water, lemon juice, sugar and salt and bring to a boil
  •  Rub some oil in the palm of your hands and form small dumplings with the rice mixture
  •  Drop the dumplings into the boiling water and lower the heat and allow to simmer
  •  Serve hot garnished with chopped coriander

Wow, this is such an interesting recipe, I read it through 3 times. It would be good for people who avoid wheat too. I just wish you had a photo – I’d love to see what they look like and how they are made!! Thanks for the recipe 🙂
